The power of a simple clap 👏

Hi Reader,

Fall has definitely arrived on Vancouver Island, and I’m loving the autumn colours. Last weekend, the weather was stunning; we even enjoyed sitting outside, and then, almost overnight, the temperatures dropped. I’m actually enjoying the change of seasons, though. 🍂

In today’s Backyard Gossip, I wanted to take you back to the theme of simplicity.

Because sometimes, the simplest things make the most significant impact.

On one of my weekly jogs, I passed a couple out for a walk.

They were deep in conversation, but as I ran by, the woman suddenly looked in my direction, smiled, and clapped her hands in encouragement.

Such a small gesture.

But it meant a lot.

Because let’s be honest, even though I’m diligent about my weekly jog, I don’t always feel like going.

That tiny moment of recognition gave me an unexpected boost.

It reminded me that we never really know the impact of something as simple as showing support.

I’m not saying you need to applaud every jogger you see 😉

But what if you encouraged someone today, just because you can?

It could be as simple as:

💬 Sending a quick text to a friend

💛 Leaving a post-it note on a colleague’s desk

👍 Giving a thumbs-up to someone doing their best

Simplicity in encouragement means noticing someone’s effort and choosing to acknowledge it.

It doesn’t take much time. It doesn’t cost a thing.

But it can make all the difference.

So, this week, give it a try.

Try encouraging someone with a simple gesture and see what happens.

Sending you fall greetings from Canada 🍁

Peggy

View in browser Hi Reader, Last week I spent a week skiing in Whistler, yes, I (we) had a wonderful time, and I was even in the Olympic Spirit 😊 ⛷️ And it reminded me of something I hadn’t thought about in a while: the joy of being a beginner again. Besides the two days of skiing last year, the last time I went skiing for a whole week was in 2014 😅 Over the past year, I’ve been embracing that beginner mindset a lot, mostly thanks to my MBA journey. When you’re learning constantly, you’re...

View in browser Hi Reader, A short and sweet note this week, I’m off to Whistler for a week of skiing ❄️⛷️ But, I wanted to share this little story with you... Last week, while sitting in a waiting room (one of those unexpected pockets of time), I decided to make the most of it and catch up with a few friends. And then I noticed something. I was texting people in Belgium, South Africa, USA, Sweden, France, Switzerland, Australia and yes, in Canada as well 😅 My gosh! In my MBA cohort alone, my...

View in browser Hi Reader, Last week I had a not-so-nice reminder about something I talk about all the time: The importance of clarity. I had an upcoming quiz in my MBA program, and, wanting to prepare properly (hey, you know me 😏), I reached out twice to clarify exactly what we were expected to study. No response. Crickets. I went into the quiz thinking I had prepared for what was required… and walked out feeling frustrated and honestly a bit angry. Because what I thought we had to study...
